Module 4: Patient types and their symptomatic management

The clinical manifestations of multiple sclerosis vary between patients, depending on how the disease progresses and where the demyelinating lesions occur. Moreover, it is impossible to accurately predict the future course of the disease for a given patient. These factors make treatment decisions difficult. In the last 5 years, new treatments with benefits in some stages of the disease have been introduced. However, as these drugs do not stop the demyelinating process, symptomatic treatments are still important. Managing a patient with multiple sclerosis is further complicated by many inter-related factors: those influencing disease course, pleomorphic aspects of the clinical symptoms, fluctuations in disability, and psychological factors.

In the text that follows, we summarize the different types of multiple sclerosis and the main neurological symptoms encountered in clinical practice. We have tried to outline the principles of management and provide a brief and useful review of symptomatic treatments available.
