Module 1: Epidemiology and Aetiology

Foreword

Complex traits are disorders determined by interactions among genes, environment and chance. They include conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and cancer - the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in the developed world. Most chronic autoimmune diseases appear to be complex traits also. Multiple sclerosis, a disease which most investigators consider to be autoimmune in nature, epitomizes the complexity of gene/environment/chance interactions. In the text that follows, we summarize and interpret the plentiful epidemiological evidence gathered on multiple sclerosis with an attempt to place these into the general context of aetiology.
